Alphonse Mucha knew industrialist Charles R. Crane (1858-1939) well, as Crane commissioned several of his paintings, among them Mucha’s painting of Crane’s first daughter, Josephine. Mucha saw Crane as enigmatic, inscrutable, taciturn, strange. Crane keenly observed his surroundings, spoke rarely, analyzing the situation. Mucha likened him to a chess player always contemplating his next move. Crane built his industrial empire by sponsoring promising political figures and profiting in later on his investments. Crane was the eminence grise behind many events happening around the turn of the century. However, his penchant for secrecy was so strong that he remains unnoticed by most historians.

…nebyl on ten rozvraceč impérií a podporovatel revolucí Richard Crane náhodou zároveň i podporovatelem těch rozkrádaček a politických skandálů? Ono v takové čerstvě zrozené porevoluční zemi se krade daleko lépe než v letitém zkostnatělém imériu… zvlášť když člověk pomůže novým mocipánům a ti zase za odměnu přivřou oči.

Jenom by mě zajímalo, kdopak asi financoval naši novou „sametovou republiku“…

This is a wonderful contribution, Richard Cray was definitely there, and, the Czechs are absolutely oblivious to those facts. T.G.M. was a father of the Republic, there’s nothing behind it, that’s how Czechs wiev it, and nothing will persuade them to the contrary.
Cheers Rad
